Why I Decided to Turn My Photography Hobby Into a Business

The Market Days

Throughout 2024, I spent a lot of weekends at the markets, selling my prints face-to-face. I also launched my first website under Pause Every Moment Photography. For something that started out as a hobby, the website went surprisingly well. I wasn’t raking in big money, but that was never the point. For me, it wasn’t about the extra cash (although let’s be honest, no one complains about that!).

What really filled my heart was seeing people connect with my work. When someone chose one of my prints because it reminded them of a memory, a place, or even a feeling—that was worth more than any sale.

A Memorable Encounter - Why I Decided to Turn My Photography Hobby Into a Business

One story will always stick with me. At the Haig Markets, I had a print of Blenheim Beach (Jervis Bay, NSW) taken by drone. A young woman stopped as soon as she saw it, and I could see the emotion on her face. She told me that as a child, she spent holidays on that very beach. One year she was playing in a rockpool when something tugged at her legs—at first, her family didn’t believe her, but then they realised an octopus had wrapped itself around her!

That memory came rushing back the moment she saw my print. She couldn’t leave without buying it. For me, that’s the greatest reward—knowing a photo I’ve taken can spark such a strong, personal connection.

Taking a Break & Rebranding

When winter rolled around in 2024, I took a break from the markets. At the same time, I got a bit slack with keeping up my website, and eventually I let it lapse. But at the start of 2025, I decided I wasn’t going to let that happen again. If I really wanted to take photography seriously, I needed to treat it like a business. That meant rebranding and creating a proper website that reflected who I am.

The Name Change

The question was: what to call it? This time I wanted something real, something professional, something that would grow with me. The answer was simple—use my own name. And so, Nicole Kearns Photography was born. (And yes, for those who know me personally—Nicole is my actual, official name! Haha.)

The Reality of Running a Small Business

Now, I’m sure some people wonder: is it easy, are you making bulk cash, what’s it like? The truth is, it’s not easy. I’m still working full-time during the week, plus running an Airbnb, while building this business on the side. Any small business owner will tell you—success doesn’t happen overnight. And with photography, it’s even more personal.

No, I’m not making “bulk cash.” But that’s not why I’m here. What I am doing is chasing something I love, and that makes all the difference. Photography is my me-time. Whether it’s a freezing sunrise, a fiery sunset, or anything in between, the moment I pick up my camera, nothing else matters.

Why I Took the Leap

Why I Decided to Turn My Photography Hobby Into a Business?

So, why did I decide to turn my hobby into a small business? Because of you. Every time I capture a scene and turn it into a print, and then someone falls in love with it—because it reminds them of a memory, a holiday, a feeling—that’s the reason. That connection is why I do this.

Photography is my passion, and sharing it with others is the next step in my journey. I didn’t have to turn it into a business. I wanted to. And honestly? I wouldn’t change a thing.

The Future of Nicole Kearns Photography

As I look ahead, I’m excited about the possibilities. I want to expand my collection and reach more people. My goal is to become the go-to source for stunning landscape and drone photography prints of Canberra and the NSW coast. I believe that with dedication and a little bit of creativity, I can achieve this.

Engaging with My Audience

I love hearing from you! Your stories and connections to my work inspire me. If you have a favorite print or a memory tied to one of my photos, please share it with me. Your feedback keeps me motivated and helps me grow as an artist.

Exploring New Techniques

I’m also keen to explore new photography techniques. Whether it’s experimenting with different lenses or trying out new editing styles, I want to keep evolving. The world of photography is vast, and I’m eager to learn more.

Conclusion

In conclusion, my journey in photography has been a fulfilling adventure. From nervous beginnings at the markets to rebranding and setting new goals, every step has been worth it. I’m grateful for the connections I’ve made and the memories I’ve captured.
